ÜBER

This is a call to arms.

Drummer seeking fellow musical artists to form brand new band. This is a call out to anyone out there who is NOT interested in becoming a musician but IS interested in becoming a musical artist.

Hi, I’m Tomás and I want to make art through music. I am 31 and primarily a drummer but I also play percussion, synthesisers, and bits of piano, bass, & guitar as well as compose, record, and produce. I love art, books, films, and documentaries and when composing music I often take inspiration from these other art forms, not just other music (track 1 on the playlist is a good example of this). With this new project, I would really like the art and the meaning of the art to be the focal point, creating music where art drives the technical and not the other way around.

So. I am looking for people, for band members. Partners in crime. Artistic allies. Friends but also professionals. For a family. People who love art and music but are very well aware of how much hard work it involves. People who want to do this because it is good for their soul but also want and need to make a living from it. People who want to do this full-time. People who can play in tune and in time and with feel… but primarily with love. The aim is for this new group of people to collectively form a new band as their artistic outlet.

The project primarily needs a great singer & lyricist…. but in addition I would consider any other instruments including guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion, any form of synthesiser (preferably analogue), strings, and any combination there of, etc. Multi-instrumentalists are especially welcome as is anyone with experience producing and/or sound engineering. I’m also open to having multiple lead singers. Basically, at the end of the day, if you agree with me that your priority is to make musical art with love and you are curious about making music with me, then I am curious about making music with you too.

Other things I am looking for in band members:
- You are on time. Always.
- You don’t make excuses.
- You are prepared.
- You are flexible.
- You are willing to make this your only musical project for the time being. I am not interested in anyone who is in five bands at the same time.
- You are unafraid of having a “band meeting” because you know it’s a helpful step towards the band’s goals.
- You don’t take things personally. It’s always about what makes the music better.
- You are generally not a dickhead.
- You are willing to make sacrifices.
- When it goes wrong, you learn from it.
- When it’s your fault, you can acknowledge it, you can laugh about it, but you also seek to do better next time.
- You accept that things aren’t perfect and never will be. But we can still try.
- You’re a human being with a life. Dedication to art can be consuming but we should not forget ourselves.
- You’re not in it to be cool or to take drugs. You’re in it because you have a genuine love and need to make music & art.
- You’re aware that it's not about “making it” and afterwards having to adopt a professional attitude. It’s the other way around. It’s about having a professional attitude right now which will later on lead to becoming a professional band.
- You are willing to rehearse a minimum of two days per week but maybe up to five days per week.

I have imagined that the music of this new project can take influence from the bands listed below. However, I think one of my strengths is to be able to adapt to the musicians around me and I want to remain like that. Therefore, I list the influences here but I am completely open about taking new ones on board, be it from the other musicians or from the arts scene around me.

So. Think LCD Soundsystem, meets Arcade Fire, meets Mars Volta, meets Pink Floyd, meets Flaming Lips. And you can’t forget The Beatles. Or Radiohead. Some Nirvana might be needed too. In other words, think analogue synthesisers helping us create very solid danceable grooves whilst wearing emotion on its sleeve. Then be unafraid of throwing in some prog, some heaviness, darkness, and depth. Then, somehow make space for psychedelic textures and landscapes. If theatrics also manage to make their way in, then why not. And now imagine doing all of that whilst never quite leaving the pop genre and maintaining a high level of catchy-ness. This is art after all, I don’t want to alienate the listeners, I want to draw them in; I want them to understand what we are saying but whilst still challenging them and without having to dumb it down for them. Oh, and I want it to sound like the future. By that I mean I want to make something new and to move music forward.

Other bands that have been influential to me: Elbow, The Shins, Everything Everything, Toe, Gorillaz, Tool, Hot Chip, Passion Pit, Animal Collective, The Go! Team, Passion Pit, Miike Snow, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alt-J, MGMT, Tame Impala, Broken Bells, Django Django, Yeasayer, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, Rio Grande, The Band, Electric Eye, Little Dragon, Metronomy, The Offspring, PJ Harvey, The Roots, Smashing Pumpkins, Sublime, Them Crooked Vultures, Uakti, Yawning Man… and many more.

So that’s what I am imagining right now. Yet, I know that’s not how it works. I don’t want this to be a solo project or anything like that and I am well aware that once we get a group together it becomes more about whatever music that particular group of people creates. The description above may completely change because of the added members, and that’s ok because I would also like this project to maintain a malleability that will allow us to explore whatever we feel like exploring at the time.

Furthermore, a playlist containing example of my work can be found here (tinyurl.com/TomasPocinhoMusic) and a pdf containing the full credits of the playlist can be found here (tinyurl.com/TomasPocinhoMusicPDF). The music styles vary quite a lot depending on who I am collaborating with. Songs 1, 2, & 3 are the ones closest to the direction in which I want to go. but really I wouldn’t mind at all going in all of the directions. The pdf with credits should give you an idea of all the different roles I’ve had within each song. For example, on song 5 I did everything regarding the percussion (include its mixing) but had zero involvement in the composition. In contrast, on song 1 I was involved in almost every aspect of the song. Another note is that when I produce, I tend to steer away from the MIDI and the digital, trying to remain with the acoustic and the analogue (such as in tracks 1, 2, 5, & 6).

Regarding our work ethic, I want this project to be productive and to have regular output. In other words, we won’t be rehearsing for twelve months before we “feel ready” to play the first show. You can’t be ready for the first show so you just need to go and do it because getting out there and playing live IS part of the preparation. Additionally, I want to set targets and to meet them. This could, for example, be: play 5 shows within the first 4 months, and release an album/EP within the first 6 months, etc.

Regarding our recording & rehearsing methods. One of my main goals is to find a decent place which we can call our musical “home” or “headquarters” in the long term. What I mean is that I would like to find a permanent rehearsal space in which we can also build recording facilities. This will be where we feel at home and are able to be creative and then have the gear available to self-record and produce.

As for band dynamics. Who will be the leader? Or will it have a partnership of a couple of songwriters? Or will it be a complete democracy? Well, I am aware that it is me writing this post and therefore it is likely for the beginning of this project’s life to be led by me. But again, I would like this to be malleable. My priority is for the band dynamics to work for the benefit of the music. If in the long term it just works for me to lead the project, then I will happily do it. But I would be equally happy with any of the other options. As long as it works, who cares.

Anyway, that was a bit longer than I anticipated… and I am aware that I am, in a way, asking for a lot… but if you are curious about what I’ve written then lets just meet up, maybe have a coffee, definitely have a jam, and take it from there. If you are writing to me it would be helpful to send any samples of your previous work.

All the best,
Tomás
